ANZ KAFKA (1883-1924) was a German-language writer of visionary novels and short stories who is widely regarded as one of the major figures of 20th-century literature.
Few of Kafka's works appeared during his lifetime: some short story collections were issued, and individual stories, such as "The Metamorphosis" (1915), were published in literary magazines but received little public attention.
Misgivings about his work caused Kafka to request that all his unpublished manuscripts be destroyed upon his death; his friend and literary executor, Max Brod, disregarded his instructions.
As a result, many of Kafka's best-known works -- including the unfinished novels THE TRIAL (1925), THE CASTLE (1926), and AMERIKA (1927) -- were published posthumously.
His stories and novels, which fuse elements of realism and the fantastic, typically feature isolated protagonists faced by bizarre or surrealistic predicaments and incomprehensible social-bureaucratic powers, and have been interpreted as exploring themes of alienation, existential anxiety, guilt, and absurdity.
Above all, the lucidly described but inexplicable darkness in Kafka's writing reveal his own frustrated personal struggles.
All his work bears the marks of a man suffering in spirit and body, searching desperately for meaning and a sense of purpose.
His letters and diaries, in particular, present an image of a profoundly depressed man, isolated from friends and family, involved in a series of failed relationships, and constantly sick (as well as providing a detailed view of the writer's thoughts and feelings, as well as some of his most famous and quotable statements).
Kafka himself looked upon his writing and the creative act it signified as a means of "redemption," as a "form of prayer" through which he might be reconciled to the world or transcend his negative experience of it
